Start by choosing the jobs that apply to your cabin or cottage. Walk through the list before the last visit so appointments, supplies and people can be arranged in advance. A closing list is more useful when each job has an owner, an agreed date and a place to record what happened.
- Before the closing visit: confirm the date, book property-specific service work, and ask helpers to accept their jobs.
- During the visit: use the instructions for your own equipment, record completed work, and note anything that could not be finished.
- Before leaving: check the unfinished list, confirm the local contact and agree on the next house check.
- For next season: keep repairs, receipts and reopening notes together so the next person can pick up where you left off.
What should a closing job include?
For example, “confirm the boat-storage appointment” needs the provider’s name, an agreed date, who will be there and where to leave the confirmation. “Winterize the water system” needs the instructions or qualified service provider for this exact property. A checkmark alone cannot tell the next person which work was done.
Can I use this for a cottage or lake house?
Yes. Adapt the organizational list to your property and season. Heated homes and buildings left unheated need different technical plans. This template does not prescribe valve positions, antifreeze use, thermostat settings or equipment procedures.
